Nacogdoches, Texas is a small town in Comal County, Texas, located on the Nacogdoches River. The population was 2,854 at the 2000 census. It was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1845. Nacogdoches is named after Samuel Nácio García de la Garza y Ocampo, who served as governor of Coahuila and Mexico from 1789 to 1793 and as president of the Mexican Republic from 1800 to 1801. His grandson José de la Garza y Ocampo founded Nacogdoches in 1845. The first post office in Nacogdochese was opened in 1851. A second school building was built on Second Street around 1870-1871 by Jno Ewing Smith and also used for education until it caught fire in 1886 which destroyed it; this became known as "The Forrester School" because one of its two floors housed classes for girls only before it too caught fire four years later when a group of boys left bicycles parked outside to use them as kindling). In 1898 Pte Wm Fenton (later Major General William Fenton) led an expedition into Coahuila with Lt Col Wm Gorman (of Baylor College) under command to explore potential mineral resources there – they discovered oil!
