Murphy is a small town in Texas, located on the border of Louisiana and Mexico. The population was 9,870 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trinity County government. The name Murphy comes from Spanish Mission San Miguel de Allende, which was founded in 1719 by Father José Antonio Burgoa y Pico. The mission was abandoned in 1824 and its land became part of present-day Murphy. This small town began as a stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1856, Murphy's post office opened and served as an important link between New Orleans and Texarkana. In 1886, Isaac Murrow bought some land in what is now Murphy for $5 per acre (the first market rate for this area). He erected a lumberyard and began to sell farm products to settlers in neighboring La Plata County. By 1905, his company had become one of the largest landowners in Trinity County with over 6,000 acres under cultivation. Murphy's business success led him to invest more money into real estate development throughout his county seat, including two hotels—one on Market Street (now called Loop 1604) and one on Main Street—as well as churches and other businesses. In 1912 he donated $10 million to help finance construction of the University of Texas at Austin (UTA). AsMurphy's wealth grew increasingly liquidized during World War I through investments such as oil exploration interests in Venezuela and Brazil; he died without leaving any will or testamentary instructions about his fortune. His widow continued her management until her death in 1951.—Murphy had six children: Sarah Elizabeth (1873-1965), Isaac William (1879-1967), James Edward "Jed" (1900-1973), Alice Pauline Chapman Burke Moran(1905-1994), John Boyle Moran(1920-1996)). Each child inherited only 50% of their father's estate but each enjoyed individual control over some portion thereof after their parents' deaths.—The town started out modestly - just seven homes were built when it formally incorporation took place on July 1st 1887.- With its booming economy came social tensions: Wealthy men bought all sorts of luxury goods while poorer residents could only purchase basic necessities like food or water.–During World War II: After the United States entered into war against Nazi Germany; many people left town to join up with their loved ones overseas.—After WWII: too much prosperity brought social unrest; people formed gangs that conducted criminal activities.—As recently as 2001: A fire destroyed most of downtown Murphy; this caused significant damage which has yet to be completely repaired.–On February 5th 2016 local citizens decided they would no longer tolerate crime within their community so a new police department was created
