Murphy, Texas is a small town located in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. Murphy was founded in 1872 by John Murphy and his wife Emma. The community name comes from Joe Murphy who homesteaded there in 1881. In 1907, the state of Texas designated Murphy as the county seat for McLennan County. It remained the county seat until 1911 when it was moved to Tyler. The first post office was established in Murphy on December 4, 1872. The first school in Murphy opened its doors on July 5,1873. It operated for one year before being closed due to lack of funds. The old school building is still standing today and is used as a museum that features local history and artifacts from around the area
