Murphy, Texas is a small town located in Brown County, Texas. The population was 1,386 at the 2000 census. Murphy is home to the Murphy Museum of Art and History. The museum was founded in 1984 by artist Tom Murphy and his wife Betty. The Murphys are major donors to the museum and have given over $3 million since its creation. The first settlers in Murphy were David and Margaret Matson who arrived in 1836. They built a cabin on an isolated mesa overlooking the Trinity River. From here they watched as development grew around them, eventually trading with Native Americans for goods such as watermelons and buffalo meat. In 1872, John Fenton purchased land near Murphy from David Matson for $1,000 cash. He began to build what would become his largest ranch when he sold acreage for a total of 100 miles² along the Trinity River to eleven other ranchers including Harry Hines, John Ladd, Wm Jernigan and James Magleby in 1875-76. In 1886 Fenton transferred ownership of his ranch to his son-in-law Will Rogers who continued it until 1915 when it passed into receivership due to bankruptcy filings made by members of his family subsequent thereto (Gonzalez v Rogers). In 1907 Ewing Ketchum became interested in buying part of Fenton’s Rancho Grande property adjoining Murphy which he did not own but claimed as part of his interest in Rancho Grande (later renamed Kerr County) after purchasing it from Ewing’s brother Wiley Ketchum Sr..On October 15th 1907 Ketchum filed a claim on behalf of himself, wife Alice Clementsinger(widow of Orville Hitchcock)and four minor children on behalf of all 14 heirs apparent( Donald Hitchcock born 1906), Jane “Joan” Hitchcock born 1908; her three sisters: Norma Ladd born 1909; Verna Mae Hitchcock born 1912). On November 3rd 1907 Ketchum delivered proof that he had title deeds from both Ranchos Grande & Kerr County titles dating back to 1876 which has never been challenged or revised course ever! It is interesting that after years long legal battle no one could provide any evidence that this document ever existed let alone been used by anyone! In 1911 Wm Jernigan organized Whatcom cattle drives across Mexico into what would become known as round up country whereupon they took advantage of laws governing transportation allowing transport services available only through Chihuahua City Mexico providing buyers with beef then shipping it back home via railroads crossing the Ural Mountains arriving at Brownsville TX where markets were established
