The original Murphy post office was established on November 15, 1881, and opened for business on December 1. The name of the town comes from John A. Murphy, Texas is located in Comanche County, and it has been inhabited by the Wichita people for over three hundred years. The first white person to set foot on Murphy was James W. Murphy in 1827. In 1868, Murphy became a county seat of Comanche County and it remained that way until 1907 when the town of McAlester was established adjacent to McAlester County seat. The first store on the present-day south side of town opened in 1886. The post office began operations in 1887 and later changed its name to Murphy after James W. Murphy. One of the most important early businesses in Murphy was the Joplin Grain Elevator which opened on Main Street in 1893 and operated until 1920 when it burned down. The first school also opened in 1886, but it closed within a few years due to lack of funding. The second school, which was built on land donated by John Kappelman, reopened in 1908 and continues to serve students today. In 1912, two banks were founded - First National Bank and National Bank of Kansas City - both of which continue operation today as part of the current Moran banking family legacy. In 1916, World War I broke out and many men from Comanche County enlisted with the Army or Navy while their families stayed home to help support them; however, only one individual from Comanche County actually served during World War I: George Hargrave who went off to fight with the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) at Verdun France as a sergeant major with Company C 1st Battalion 3rd Infantry Regiment Missouri State Guard regiment #1 (the “Gentlemen”). After his return from Verdun he married local girl Millicent Doherty who had also served overseas – she would ultimately give birth to four children before her death at age ninety-one in 2007; however those children still live at home today with their mother.” /> After World War I ended there were several changes take place within Comanche County as people returned home from military service or left for other opportunities: There were new residents coming back such as oil millionaires like Harry Crane or ranchers such as Wiley Weaver who started Rancho Luna near modern day Webb City; these ranchers would base their operations around what they could find grazing land nearby while larger ranches continued being run by old timers like Jimmie Daniels or Tom Reeves Jr.. Although ranching declined thereafter because large tracts were bought up by somebody else late into the 20th century various small farmers still remain active along SR 2nd St & FM 936 NW. Another change took place when all public schools closed within Comanche County due largely to budget cuts made by then Superintendent Ephraim McGeehan instead focusing resources more narrowly on McAlester High School effective starting September 1st 1957. As mentioned earlier budgets had become increasingly tight throughout much rural America during this time period particularly following an economic recession beginning about 1946 known officially as “The Great Depression” However some former pupils have recently formed a group called Gateway Schools Preservation Committee which is working towards saving defunct Gateway High School building currently occupied by Moran Business Park across Sprinkle Road from Moran Elementary School where classes used to be held priorito
Murphy, Texas was founded in 1879 by John Murphy and his wife Emma. The town was named for John's older brother, Maurice, who had died in a hunting accident two years earlier. In 1881 the Murphy family moved to what is now Hill Country on the east side of Murphy. They started a small mercantile business that prospered until 1885 when John's younger brother Daniel bought the business from them. Daniel operated it as a grocery store and post office before selling it to his son Maurice in 1907. Maurice continued to run it as a grocery store until 1951 when it became an express mail station and then an agricultural supply store. The store closed in 1984 and was replaced by a convenience store.
