Murphy, Texas is a small town located in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,632 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Williamson County. Murphy was founded in 1881 and named for Hugh Murphy, a cattle rancher and politician who served as state legislator from 1886 to 1890. The post office in Murphy was first established in 1885 and changed its name toMurphyville in 1907. The town had one road traffic light until 1955 when it replaced an earlier switchboard with an automatic teller machine (ATM). The Murphy Volunteer Fire Department operates three engines and two trucks. Murphy is home to the only high school within Williamson County which offers Associate's degrees in business administration and criminal justice/police science; the only college within Williamson County which offers associate's degrees in business administration, law enforcement officer training, information technology, nursing/medical assisting/clinical assistant; and two family businesses: One restaurant serving local cuisine called "The Old Place" dating back to 1924 and another restaurant serving Americanized Mexican cuisine called "El Rancho". In addition there are numerous retail stores including several farmers markets as well as a few convenience stores. There are also several small businesses that have opened up since the late 1990s such as a health food store called Garden Grocery (now Peet's) which replaced what used to be an independent grocery store on Main Street; a hair salon called Salon 2000 which replaced what used to be a beauty salon on Eighth Street; a software company founded by 4th Ward Mayor Garry McCarthy that opened up shop next door to his mayoral office after years of planning; an auto body shop; two truck stop restaurants - one open 24 hours each -one offering breakfast burritos for lunchtime only; two movie theaters - both showing independent films during regular business hours while also hosting live music shows nightly at least once during each month - one featuring country music every other weeknight while also hosting live theater shows nightly at least once during each month plus occasional concerts held outside of the movie theaters throughout the year.; four churches affiliated with Baptist (including one Zion Church), Methodist (including one Pentecostal), Roman Catholic (two sisters' parishes), Lutheran (one parish has started using automated check-in machines) and Presbyterian church member services taking place throughout various parts oftown on Sundays morning through evening along with special events like Fourth Grade Christmas playdates or Fourth Grade Graduations!

During World War II, many residents served in military service including Sergeant First Class Merrill Dyer who fought at Guadalcanal and other islands in Pacific Theater; Pvt John Purdy who fought at Okinawa; Sgt Melvin Ladd who served on Iwo Jima; Lance Corporal Donny Hufford who fought in Korea; Capt Leroy Fenton who served aboard USS Missouri during World War II In 1957, Mayor Floyd O'Neill proposed annexing Republic of Murphy to Coahuila y Tejas due to its lack of development since its secession from America two decades earlier The annexation proposal passed but did not take effect because Coahuila y Tejas only granted autonomy to Republic of Murphy within its own borders rather than incorporating it into Mexico proper After independence came economic prosperity which saw increased development throughout Townspeople started investing money back into their community which led to more businesses being opened up However with statehood coming about in 1960 things changed again as State Senator Will Barnes traveled to TX to urge then Governor Royce Lamberth (D-Tex.) not to allowish Republic Of Murphy statehood because he felt there would be negative consequences such as job losses while also accusing Republic Of Murphys leadership of corruption
