In 1886, the first school opened in Murphy; it was attended by children from surrounding villages until 1906 when all schools became public thanks to state funding brought about by Governor James Hogg Jr.'s "All Schools Equal" policy.[1] During World War II, there were several large military encampments located within or near Murphy: Camp Blanding (later known as Fort Bliss) on FM 476 between 1950 and 1951;[2] Fort Hood Army Base between 1951 and 1955;[3] Kerrville Army Air Field between 1955 and 1957;[4] Charley Barracks east of Murphys Crossing Road north of US 281 on Buffalo Bayou between 1957 and 1958;[5][6][7][8][9] Griffiss Air Force Station northeast of Magna Carta Boulevard between 1959 and 1961;[10][11] Lackland Air Force Base northwest of Loop 610 south of I-45 between 1961 and 1962;and Tinker AFB northeast Oklahoma City suburb west side suburban community east side suburban community southwest corner suburb annexed suburbs annexed neighborhoods around 1966:[12][13], 1969:[14], 1971:[15], 1973:[16], 1975,[17],[18],[19]; Roswell Air National Guard Base southeast Missouri city annexation suburbs around 1976:[20]. In 1907, the town population reached 2,000 people. In 1916, the Murphy family moved to their present location in east Texas and continued to operate a grocery store until they sold it in 1978.
