The first magazine was built in 1892 and lasted for about 25 years. The second magazine was built in 1907 and lasted for about 10 years.

Murphy is located in the eastern part of Hudspeth County and is bordered to the north by McLennan County and to the south by Armstrong County. It lies at elevation 912 feet (269 m). The first post office in Murphy was established on November 3, 1873. The name of the town was changed from White Sands to Murphy on October 27, 1907. The present day Murphy Townsite was platted on December 6, 1909 and named for Edward H. Murphy who served as county treasurer from 1912 to 1916. The first school in Murphywasestablished on February 17, 1874 as a one-room schoolhouse with 11 students. A new frame school building was built in 1895 which became a municipally owned high school that continued operation until it closed its doors in 1966 due to financial problems. In 1927, the state legislature passed an act providing for public education within Hudspeth County through elementary schools and ungraded junior colleges until such time as special appropriations could be made for this purpose by local governments; therefore, Murphyschool system went into effect September 28th27th with grades PK-8 starting out classes at Lyons High School then going down hill to Tatum Intermediate School before ending up back at White Sands High School where all 8 grades currently attend except PreKindergarten are housed currently along with someelementary & middle schools inside of old Lyon HS building which will eventually become a senior center once complete

Murphy, Texas is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Murphy began as a small settlement on the banks of the Brazos River in 1855. It was named for Major General James Murphy who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as U.S. Minister to Mexico City. The post office at Murphy was opened in 1858 and remained in operation until 1907. In 1865, John Withers purchased land east of Murphy from the Chisholm family and founded Withersville on what is now part of Loop 410 west of town. In 1886, Withersville merged with Murphy to form one municipality. The first school in Murphy opened in 1892 and remains open today as Battle Creek Elementary School; it became a public school District #1 school district after that date. In 1925, Battle Creek Intermediate School replaced primary/middle schools which were built between 1922 and 1925 by the Town Board pursuant to an act of the State Legislature (HJR 245). According to the 2010 US Census, 2% of Murphy's residents identified themselves as Black or African American; this number has not changed since 2000 when 1% reported such identification
Murphy was founded in 1871 by John Murphy and his family. The town was named for Patrick Murphy, the brother of John Murphy. The town had a population of about 60 people when it was first established. It grew to about 100 people by 1881. By 1907, the population had grown to over 250 people. In 1920, the town became an independent municipality with its own government. The population decreased to about 150 people in 1960, but increased to around 300 people by 1990.
