In addition to its namesake riverbank location - which offers excellent views of nearby Austin - Murphy features a mix of suburban homes and traditional farmhouses dating back to before World War II. Many residents also own horses or cattle are ranches that dot the rural landscape outside their homes; making for interesting perspective during long drives into town during summertime when all you can see are these animals grazing instead of cars driving by overhead! It should be noted that while there are several restaurants dotted around downtown – including Joe’s Crab Shack,[5] Joes Pizza,[6] Firehouse Subs,[7] etc.– most people who grew up here still prefer going out onto Main Street for lunch or dinner because so many local businesses have stayed open over time including Hometown Cafe,[8][9] Second Generation Bakery,[10][11], KFC[12], Dairy Queen[13][14], Verizon Wireless Headquarters[15], etc.– making it easy to find what you need without having too much trouble finding your way back inside again!

It was named for Arthur Murphy, an early settler in the area. In 1875, the Bell Telephone Company built its first line through Murphy. The community experienced some economic difficulties during the Great Depression of the 1930s. However, it regained some stability after World War II and became a residential and commercial center for Comanche County. In the 1990s, Murphy began to experience significant redevelopment as a result of waves of immigration from Latin America and Asia. As more people moved into the community, it lost its traditional agricultural character; however, its landscape remains largely rural with few development projects that would detract from its charm.
Murphy was founded by John Murphy in 1836. The town became a county seat in 1870 and was named for General James H. Murphy, the first U.S. Army general to die in action during the Mexican-American War.
