In 1908, the town annexed neighboring Clintonville and formed a single municipality with its own government. The city of Clintonville merged into Murphy on January 1, 2009. The economy of Murphy is based primarily on agriculture and ranching; there are no other significant businesses or industries within the town limits. The only industry that has been established within the town limits since 2007 is a dairy farm that produces blue cheese and other cheeses for local consumption. Murphy is home to two schools: Junior High School (grades 7-12) and Senior High School (grades 11-12). Both schools are operated by the Johnson County Independent School District (JCISD).
