Murphy, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 597 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1892 by Irish immigrants. It became a ghost town when the railroad bypassed it and freight trains stopped coming to Murphy in the 1920s. Today, only a few buildings remain from the original Murphy community and its residents have all moved away since then. The history of Murphy begins with two men named John and Patrick Murphy who settled down on what is now the north side of town in 1892. John had been born in County Clare, Ireland and his parents had come to America to find work. They settled near Fort Worth in 1878 and started an agricultural business that would be successful for many years. In 1907, they bought 2 acres (0 hectares) of land on which they built their first home – a one-story cabin that still stands today on Elm Street in downtown Murphy. Patrick also arrived in America soon after he graduated from college; he worked as a farmhand before buying 2 acres (0 hectares) of land just south of where John and Pat live today for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). He built another house there also – this one known as “The White House” because it was originally white but has since been painted black with green shutters so that it can look like an old plantation house from back home. In 1928, Patrick married Mary Ann Maher who lived adjacent to him on property that he later donated to the local school district as part of a larger deed gift campaign during Cleveland’s mayoral term (1928-29). That same year saw another addition to the family when Margaret Maher came overland from Ireland with her pregnant daughter Lillie and husband Tom Doherty along with their three children – Alice/Alison/Tommy – all born within 8 months of each other at different points along the way! hard times were ahead for these new arrivals but things did eventually improve for them when construction began on Pershing Road which connected downtown Murphy with Pershing Lake outside of town limits! The road became called “The Drive” because it served as both an artery linking downtown to surrounding rural areas as well as access intotown for those living east or west of town limits! In 1951, after 50 years without any significant growth or development taking place within our walls – despite continuous attempts by our citizens & government officials alike over many years – we experienced our first reclamation project when donations led by Mrs./Mr./all 4 residents Mr./Msgr., Don Nicholson brought forward plans & goals including: 1) beautification/amendments to existing businesses facing Main Street; 2) erection/installation & repair/maintenance…..of city hall Annexe; 3) purchase & installation (&Maintenance!)of public sidewalks leading up front doorsteps OF CITY HALL #Annexe……..& finally 4) initiation & sponsorship thru Friends Of City Hall Inc.)……………the restoration /updates OF CITY HALL WAS COMPLETED ON APRIL 15TH 2009!!!!!!!!!

In 1865, the United States acquired the Rancho de las Pulgas from Francisco Pulgas. The land that now makes up Murphy was part of this rancho.
