Mount Pleasant, a small town in Houston County, Texas, is home to one of the most important scopes in American history. The 10-inch Meadeian Telescope was designed and built here by Messrs. Meade and Waddell in 1887. It is now located at Rice University’s Observatory in Houston, Texas. The telescope was used for research on a variety of topics during its lifetime including astronomy, mineralogy, planetary science and seismology. Many famous astronomers have used it including Edwin Hubble, James Clerk Maxwell and Benjamin Franklin. The tube of the Meadeian Telescope measures just over 41 feet long with a diameter of just under 8 feet at its widest point. It was first powered up on October 6th, 1886 using horse-power from an engine that ran oncoal until 1888 when oil became available. The telescope has since been run by electricity from generators or solar panels based on time delays or other problems with coal technology. It is also interesting to note that Mount Pleasant was birthplace not only of the modern telescope but also the first photography equipment ever created! In 1848 John Smeaton developed a camera capable of taking pictures through a telescope which he named “the magnifying glass” after his friend and mentor Nicholas–Jacques Conte (1768-1851).

Mount Pleasant, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, located on the banks of the Brazos River. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The name Mount Pleasant is derived from "mighty" and "pleasant," which are both root words meaning "pleasant." The early settler named Mount Pleasant was John Potter. He built a cabin in 1834 on what is now Park Boulevard just upstream of today's intersection of Park Drive and FM 1415. The first post office inMount Pleasant was established in 1835. In 1836, James Clements opened a store at Main Street and Railroad Avenue and soon became an important center for trade with settlers traveling to rifle range east of Austin or west to San Antonio. From his store, Clements helped develop future downtown Mount Pleasant into one of its most important commercial areas. During World War II, Mount Pleasant played host to many Army Air Forces bomber bases including RAF Merville (later RAF Lakenheath), RAF Coltishall (formerly RAF Mildenhall) and USAAF Station Elmendorf-Richardson (now Elmendorf AFB). After the war ended, much activity centered around farming until late in the 20th century when tourism became dominant as people moved away from agriculture for new opportunities within close proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Austin and Dallas. Today there are several restaurants and businesses open year-round making Mount Pleasant one of the most vibrant small towns in central Texas

It was used by sailors to see in the dark and it was also used as a telescope because it could be placed on a tripod so that it could be able to look at things far away. The first telescopes were Calotron, which was built in 1839, and then Telescopes with mirrors which were built in 1840 and 1851. In 1856, Charles Babbage designed a machine called the Analytical Engine which was able to calculate mathematical formulas. This allowed scientists to learn about optics much more easily than they had been able to before.

Mount Pleasant was founded in 1871 by a group of farmers who moved from Missouri to what is now McLennan County. The name "Mount Pleasant" comes from the name of a nearby hill which served as their farmstead's centerpiece. The first post office in Mountpleasant was established in 1872. The first settlers were John and Mary Houston, who named their farmstead after Mount Pleasant Hill, located about 13 miles away. At the time, Mount Pleasant had only two houses and no shops or other commercial establishments. In 1875, the community voted to change its name to "Mount Pleasant." When it changed its name again in 1907, it became known as "Mt. Pleasant." In 1916, the state legislature passed an act that provided for a public school system in McLennan County and designated Mt. Pleasant as one of its initial communities within that system. It wasn't until 1927 that the first school building opened on Elm Street within the limits of present-day Mt. pleasant proper- until then students were educated at home using materials brought over by wagon trainloads from Missouri every year during summer recesses before attending local schools which were also open during those months outside of classes at Baylor University on Main Street downtown (now State Highway 183). The advent of World War II interrupted these activities; however after hostilities ended educational opportunities for most Texans increased with new federal funds granted through war relief programs such as WACS ( Woman’s Airforce Service Pilots) and AFDC (AFTERFARE). As American troops entered Germany throughout 1945 there soon emerged an embryonic black community developed around college students returning home following their service overseas - this group would come to be called "Operation Varsity" or simply "Varsity". This period saw great growth for both MtPleasant's white majority and black minority populations with many stores opening up catering specifically to African Americans; restaurants like Abyssinia Inn becoming popular spots for neighborhood residents meeting out after dark for dinner late into the night while still having access to basic services available within walking distance such as drinking water wells deep inside residential neighborhoods - something unheard of even 10 years earlier when whites generally traveled long distances into German countryside searching unsuccessfully for any sign either military or civilian concessions might be making way for integrated society back home despite sporadic protests by some isolated individuals working behind enemy lines against what they perceived as unjustifiable discrimination against patriotic Anglo-Saxon soldiers fighting our country without benefits! Many early pioneers including Methodist Episcopal minister Mrl Driggs formed what would become known collectively as Magpie Ridge Country Club which enjoyed exclusive membership statusParades honoring America's armed forces occurred annually throughout 1949 & 1950 inclusive attended by dignitaries included Ulysses S Grant birthday party observed at civic center park Sept 9th 1950 prior to his death three days later [1] another milestone event occurred on November 3rd 1953 when Mrs Smith elected herself Mayor pro tempore effective upon expiration of term set forth in law providing she could not be impeached subsequent events leading up to her decision included FBI raids on her house Feb 14th 1954 & May 5th 1955 knocking off all evidence obtained during investigations resulting in convictions 2nd District Court judge Gail Singer granting clemency 2/9/55 [2] Mrs Smith vacated office less than 5 months later citing health problems amending city charter effective date unofficially announced via letter sent TO THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TEAM March 17 1955 [3] On January 9th 1957 race riots took place between whites & blacks taking place primarily near busy intersection where Easley Rd & US Hwy 290 intersecting main drag immediately east side of Cresentpoint Mall commonly referred to today as Ft Worth Ave aka Rodney King Blvd - violence ensuing resulting 4 fatalities including rioter(s) 3 teenagers trapped inside mall amidst chaotic scenes eventually freered area extending approx ½mile south beyond mall boundaries marked today by police tape
Mount Pleasant was founded by families of Scots-Irish immigrants in 1836. The community rapidly grew and soon became a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1845, Mount Pleasant acquired its first schoolhouse, which remains in use to this day. The town also developed a strong commercial base as farmers and travelers traveled through to buy goods at the local mercantile outlets or take advantage of the variety of available services. In 1855, Mount Pleasant's population reached 1,000 people and it quickly became an important center for trade in central Texas. By 1870, Mount Pleasant had become an incorporated city with a population of 3,500 people. In 1893, Mountpleasant incorporated as a county seat and has remained so ever since. The economy of Mount Pleasant has been based primarily on agriculture and tourism since its foundation until recently when it began to experienced rapid growth in other industries such as technology and manufacturing.
