It lies on the banks of Buffalo Bayou and is within Austin-Bergstrom County. The first European to visit Mountpleasant was Juan de Salcedo on October 3, 1541. In 1836, Mexican general Antonio López Portillo discovered and named the bayou for his friend, General Zachary Taylor's aide-de-camp, José Maria Rodriguez de Legazpi. Martinez Cemetery was established in 1881 near what is now downtown Mount Pleasant. In 1907, Mountpleasant experienced its first tornado when a female student at Lamar University erected a windmill in her front yard to warn residents of a possible storm. The mill sustained damage but no injuries occurred as a result of the tornado. During World War II, Mountpleasant served as an airfield for the USAAF Ninth Air Force Bomber Command known as "the Mighty Eighth." On July 4th, 1987 there was an intense naturally generated fire that destroyed 6 homes and damaged 43 others in downtown Mount Pleasant while also damaging or destroying several businesses including two restaurants and one store locally owned by Johnnie Troutman Jr.. Then on September 26th Hurricane Rita made landfall just north of Mount Pleasant with winds speeds up to 175 mph! A total of seventeen homes were destroyed with damage totaling $67 million dollars; however it would be another year until any damage from Rita would be registered within town limits

The town of Mount Pleasant, Texas was founded in 1847 by the citizens of what is now Point Comfort, West Virginia. The name "Mount Pleasant" was given to the site because it is located on the mountain that overlooks the town and its surroundings. The first settler in Mount Pleasant was John Hargrave, who moved from Portsmouth, England in 1824. By 1830, there were six families living in Mount Pleasant. In 1846, a store and blacksmith shop were built in Mount Pleasant. A post office was established at Mount Pleasant in 1850. The population of Mount Pleasant peaked at 100 people in 1860 but dropped to about 25 by 1870. The decline of mining and cattle ranching activity led to a decline in population throughout the late 19th century. However, growth resumed beginning in the early 20th century with construction of schools and other infrastructure. By 1920, there were over 200 people living in Mountpleasant and it had become an important center for industry and commerce within Point Comfort County. Growth stopped again during World War II when most of the local industry went abroad due to shortage of materials available domestically. Today, mountpleasant continues to experience significant economic development as a result of its proximity to Pensacola Naval Base and NASA's Johnson Space Center on adjacent landfeasibility Airport Boulevard which has enabled it to continue becoming an agricultural center while also developing into a popular tourist destination for visitors interested in exploring nearby Pensacola Naval Air Station or NASA's Kennedy Space Center complex located less than 30 miles away
