Mount Pleasant, Texas is a small city located in Comal County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1887 by John A. White and his family. The population of Mount Pleasant was 1,949 as of the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is the county seat of Comal County. The first settlers in what is now Mount Pleasant were white men from Kentucky and Tennessee who came to the area during the 1849 land run that transferred ownership of Spanish colonial grants in central Texas to American settlers. In 1887 John A. White moved his family from Paducah, Kentucky to start a new life in what is now Comal County after purchasing 640 acres (2 km2) of land from David Folsom for $5 per acre ($100 at current prices). The town site was chosen due to its well-known springs which supplied water for many miles around and also because there was no other settlement within a reasonable distance for wagoners travelling between Wichita Falls and Austin. White named the community Mount Pleasant after his home state of Kentucky – where he had been born in 1785 – because “the hills hereabouts are high enough that you cannot see Wichita Falls without looking up” (White papers, LOC: TX State Archives). With just over 100 residents at its founding, Mountpleasant quickly grew into one of the most important cotton towns on the Texas Frontier. By 1907 it boasted a store, two churches, three schools and a post office (White papers). In 1912 Comal County voters approved annexation by Montgomery County; however, this did not take place until 1915 when Montgomery County voters passed an ordinance making Mountpleasant their county Seat (Montgomery papers). A short time later a fire destroyed much of the original downtown core but fortunately no lives were lost or property damage resulted as this typeof fire usually caused extensive damage (Williams papers #1-4). In 1916–1917 another major fire destroyed much more traditional structure such as homes and businesses along Main Street including White’s store which stood until 1954 when it was replaced by First Baptist Church (Williams papers #5-6). The largest single loss occurred when Mrs.(?) Smith’s grocery burned down on April 30th 1925 with damages amounting to $10 000+ ($250 thousand at present values) which at that time still ranks as one of the largest fires on record in Comal County(Williams paper #7). Despite these losses settlements began rapidly growing throughout 1926 with an addition of 25 lots across five blocks totalling 247 feet (.79 m) square each providing space for 10 buildings each(Daley documents #3-4); however development slowed thereafter until World War II erupted when citizens decided to build military barracks near their homes(Daley documents #5-6). During World War II MtPleasant experienced rapid growth with an addition of housing units totaling 3 stories plus basement levels onto vacant lots totaling 137 feet (.53 m)² leading eventually to 5 story apartment complexes/condos being built on several blocks adjoining main street(Walsh document #1; Daley document #7; photo)). These developments remain somearguably today’s tallest apartment buildings west OF Dallas/Houston

Mount Pleasant is a small town located in Liberty County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is part of the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1871 by John and Rebecca White. The first permanent settlers were Isaac Hogg and his family who arrived from Kentucky in 1872. The first school was built on the current site of the Community Bank building in 1876. A post office called Mount Pleasant was established in 1881; it closed operations in 1907. In 1902, Mrs. White donated land for a public library which opened in 1903. In 1916, the Mount Pleasant Volunteer fire department was organized and has been serving the community ever since. In 1935, Mayor Laddie Boren set up an advertising campaign to promote annexation into corpus Christi by means of a referendum vote as part of his efforts to reduce red tape necessary for annexing municipalities larger than one thousand residents into Corpus Christi County under state law then under construction (the Texas Legislature had passed House Bill 3). No votes were cast on annexation and no money changed hands from either side; however, this campaign helpedrouse interest within Mount Pleasant and other nearby towns about joining forces to form what would become Corpus Christi county When Hurricane Ike struck Texas on September 25th 2008 causing widespread damage across much of southern Texas including Mtpleasant it became clear that any hope of rebuilding had been lost However after some work done by volunteers many homes had been repaired or replaced with new homes There are now plans underway to rebuild everything from start to finish with help from local businesses
Mount Pleasant was founded in 1836 by Captain David Montgomery and his wife, Catharine. The town was named for a hill in the area, which is now part of Midtown Houston. The Montgomery's ran a saw mill there until it closed in 1851. In 1857, Captain Montgomery married Sarah Ann Wiley, and the couple moved to Mount Pleasant. They had two children: Dr. Samuel Wiley and Mrs. Anna Maria Wiley Parks. In 1865, Captains Montgomerys sold their property to John Kirby and his family after years of farming there. Kirby built the first store in Mount Pleasant and made it the nucleus of what would become downtown Houston. He also started the first post office in Mountpleasant on Valentine's Day 1865. The town got its name from General Sam Houston who left Texas for England during the Mexican-American War on February 2 that year with a small force to help retake Mexico City from Mexican forces under General Pancho Villa
