Mount Pleasant is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 1,656 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant was founded in 1859 by farmers from eastern Kentucky and Virginia who were looking for a new home after moving to Texas from Tennessee and Kentucky. The community was named for General John Houstoun, an officer with Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War who had fought in Illinois and Missouri. On November 8, 1859, two men – James Aiken and Lewis Wigglesworth – built a cabin on what is now US 421 south of town center. In 1861, Mount Pleasant became part of Karnes County when it was created from parts of Baylor County and Medina County. The first post office was established in Mount Pleasant on February 14, 1861, with Phebe Fenton as the first clerk. By 1865, there were 12 businesses in Mount Pleasant including several stores and two hotel rooms which served as meeting places for farmers and ranchers east of Austin who came to sell their products or trade goods duringthe American Civil War between North & South
