The Mount Pleasant, Texas area was first settled in the early 1800s. The town was named after General Robert E. Lee and it became a center for cotton production. In the 1920s, the industry declined but the town continued to grow. The population increased to over 10,000 by 1930 and it reached its peak in 1940 with over 20,000 residents. However, during World War II the town lost most of its residential buildings and businesses due to natural disaster strikes. The population decreased until it peaked again in 1960 with around 12,000 residents. During the 1970s and 1980s, there were several efforts to redevelop downtown Mount Pleasant but these failed to materialize due to economic reasons. In 1999, a group of investors revived downtown Mount Pleasant as an attraction for tourists and businesses. The city began developing new properties around the square mile area that includes four hotels, two theaters, three restaurants, two shops and a convention center. Roosevelt (1901-1945), Representative Lyndon B Johnson (1963-1969), Governor Ann Richards (1982-1989), Mayor Julian Castro (2012-present). As of the 2010 census, there are more than 60 businesses located in Mountpleasant with over 140 employees The history of mount pleasant started out when Scotsmen came to this area looking for land to settle after their homeland had been burned down by Mexico during their war for independence from Spain In 1845 they set up camp on what is now known as Old Highway 6 near present day Mt Pleasant They were joined by other groups who soon built homes around their encampment The name "Mount Pleasant" derived from one of these original settlements where Sir Walter Scott happened upon it while exploring this area for his book "Description of Scotland" back in 1792 Many years later another group of Scotsmen decided to establish themselves here and named themselves "The Post Office Company" which still operates today under different ownership From 1850 until 1893 there were just 3 schools open here: one for boys and two girls One reason why school didn't start really starting until much later may have been because there wasn't really any money available to be spent on building new buildings back then In 1916 when Midland merged into San Antonio we saw a lot of growth happen here due to all the industries that were moving into town such as steel production etc… so much so that by 1920 there were already over 30 businesses here… everything from grocery stores to health clinics sprang up during this time period! And even though things slowed down somewhat during World War II because most manufacturing went away actually because of all the bombing raids going on downtowns throughout those years lol but overallSan Antonians stayed busy right through it all! In 1976 when Mountpleasant merged with Midland we also saw our second mayors come into office both Roy Garnett(1976-1980) & Don Stephenson(1981-1983) both being very successful mayors who helped bring about some needed change within our community including creating new parks & libraries etc…. So although our community wasn’t exactly thriving at that point we knew that something had got need changing & eventually that changed too!! Nowadays you can definitely see some progress happening within our community especially given how central business district has become over the last few decades; however like I said before things still haven’t quite reached where they once did 😕 But overall I believe that despite some challenges facing us currently MtPleasant will continue making great strides forwardover time

The town experienced significant growth during the 1880s and 1890s as a result of its location at the crossroads of two major railroads and its position as a port for agricultural products exported to Mexico and Central America. By 1910, Mount Pleasant had lost much of its commercial activity due to railroad consolidation and prohibition; however, it retains some importance as a cultural center with several historically significant buildings including the Texas State Capitol building and the Methodist Episcopal Church.
