They named their mill Mount Pleasant after John Quincy Adams's home state of Massachusetts which they had been visiting while on their travels through North America. In 1840 Gideon Welles donated land to build an academy for black students near what is now downtown Mount Pleasant. The first school building constructed in Mountpleasant was called "Humphrey Academy." The present Mt Pleasant Baptist Church was dedicated on November 10, 1886 by Reverend Fenton Boulware as the third church in Mountpleasant and second African American church in Jasper County after Fort Bend Presbyterian Church on Main Street east of that city's courthouse which had served as both landmark Protestant church and base for prodigal African American sons since its establishment in 1865 according to county records . Ida Jane Addams moved from her childhood home near Cedar Creek northwest of Newton to Villa Park northeast of Mount Pleasant after becoming involved with local women's rights activists during her student years at nearby Rice University where she also took dance lessons from Anna Hullinger Byock beginning about 1901; her most well-known work took place as headmistress at Prairie View A&M School District No 3 (later Prairie View University) starting about 1912 until her firing in 1923 due to lack of enrollment nearly seven decades later despite receiving over $2 million dollars worth of gifts over that period including land , equipment, Endowment Funds Mount Pleasant experienced significant growth following World War II when many families left Dallas or Sulphur Springs because there were good jobs available outside the city limits . The original settlers were farmers and their families who cultivated maize, beans and other vegetables on the hills. In 1836, Mount Pleasant became a stop on the Santa Fe Railroad. Later on, Mount Pleasant also became a center for cattle ranching and cotton farming. By 1920, the town had a population of about 2,500 people. However, within 10 years it had shrunk to just 50 people because of high unemployment rates in the Great Depression.
