The Mount Pleasant Rifle Club was founded in 1892. It is one of the oldest rifle clubs in Texas. The club's first purpose was to support local rifle matches and shoots. In 1896, the club changed its name to the Mount Pleasant Rifle and Pistol Association. That organization supported statewide rifle matches and shot contests. The club moved its meeting place from around town to a new building in 1903. In 1907, the Mount Pleasant Rifle and Pistol Association changed its name back to the Mount Pleasant Rifle Club again. This time, it supported national rifle matches as well as state competitions. The club had another move in 1912 when it moved into a new building on Polk Street near Lake Travis. In 1916, theclub changed its name yet again to the Mount Pleasant Rifle and Pistol Club Incorporated (MPRC). As an incorporated society, MPRC could do more than just support local match events; it could also offer members benefits such as insurance, dues money, firewood for their guns, or other firearms-related items. In 1932, MPRC merged with another local rifle society - the West Austin Rifles - which made it possible for members of both organizations to compete against each other using shotguns instead of rifles at state competitions across Texas. In 1945, MPRC merged once again with West Austin Rifles - this time creating a single governing body for all shooting organizations within Mount Pleasant County including those within West Austin Rifles itself!
Mount Pleasant, Texas is a small town located in the US state of Texas. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Mount Pleasant is named after General James Biddle Mount Pleasant, who served as Commandant of the First Military District in 1836 and was later elected to serve as Governor of Texas from 1840 to 1845. Mount Pleasant was founded by John Pemberton in 1849 and became a full village in 1850. At that time it had a population of just seventy-five people. The first post office was opened in Mount Pleasant on November 3, 1850. In 1857, the community purchased 350 acres (160 hectares) of land for $1,000 from David Lubbock and laid out its streets and buildings on that acreage. By 1860, Mount Pleasant had a schoolhouse, Baptist church, blacksmith shop, grocery store and other businesses including two hotels - one called the Park Hotel and another called the Richardson House Hotel - as well as around twenty residences built between 1860 and 1870 by local businessmen such as Elisha Pearce who developed what is now Webster Halls Shopping Center on Westheimer Road near White Oak Bayou. In 1865–1867 Confederate forces burned down many businesses in Houston during an effort to suppress American slavery while troops were stationed there; this event is often cited as one reason why Mountpleasant began to decline during this period. However, townspeople rebuilt many of their buildings following Reconstruction with assistance from donations from locals such as Sam Houston II who had been Governor of Texas from 1830 until his death in 1877. Mount Pleasant is a small town in Kaufman County, Texas, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Mount Pleasant post office has been in operation since 1869. The first settler in what is now Mount Pleasant was James K. O’Donnell who arrived on May 25, 1851, and named it for his brother-in-law, William Pitts (1786–1859). O’Donnell had married Pitts' widow, Lydia Gregg (1792–1865), during her visit to Fort Worth in September 1850. In November 1853, James K. O’Donnell's son John Pugh settled near what is now the eastern edge of Mount Pleasant and built a cabin there on land granted him by Judge David Wacoal. Two years later, he also began to farming in what is now Mountpleasant – growing corn and beans – while living near his father's cabin at present day Lone Star Road/Hwy 656 northwest of town center. In 1857 or 1858 John Pugh married Sarah Jane Haggerty and they started a farmstead on a piece of property that still stands east of today's Market Street off FM 927 just south of HWY 290 Business Loop 2 between Carthage Road and Oldham Road/FM 573 Owl Creek Rd., about one mile from present day McGee Road (old US 281) which leads southeast into downtown Dallas proper as well as northeast into Garland/Irving TX until its intersection with I-35W just outside Ft Worth MAIN STREET . They had six children: three boys (John Pugh Jr., Nathan Pugh Sr., & Timothy Haggerty), two girls (Annie Jane Haggerty & Sally Ann Haggerty). One daughter died young; Sarah Jane remarried before she died to another George Dillard around 1875 when their youngest girl Annie Jane attained majority age under Texas law then under state code at that time but without parental consent so she became known as Alice Dillard according to some sources . Another daughter did not live long enough to reach adulthood either; Margaret Elizabeth had an affair with General Sam Houston while he was Lieutenant Governor.. There were no other children by this second wife ; however , one daughter did marry someone else after leaving home : Anna Seward McCurdy who lived briefly in MtPleasant before moving away around 1865 or66 when her husband got drafted into the Confederate army during the American Civil War
The Mount Pleasant family came to Texas in 1839. The Mount Pleasant ranchers were early settlers on the west side of the Trinity River. In 1850, they founded a small town named Mount Pleasant on the east side of the river. The town was known for its fine cotton crops and cattle ranching. In 1916, Mount Pleasant was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer, who died in battle in 1876.
