The primary use of the gunnery range until 1903 was target shooting, but from 1903-1909 it also served as an armory where firearms were kept and repaired. In 1907, it was renamed the Mount Pleasant Armory and remained active until 1945 when it was closed due to World War II military needs. In 1946, portions of the armory were turned into housing and are still extant today. During World War II, guns were used by both local residents and soldiers on garrison duty throughout South Texas. Ammunition for the guns came from north of Fort Worth and east of Amarillo. Guns were stored at various locations around town before being shipped off to fight in Europe. In 1946, when parts of the armory were turned into housing, it served as an important resource for people who lived near downtown Mount Pleasant during that time period; however, there is no evidence that any live ammunition ever been fired from or within this structure since its closure over 50 years ago!

The first settler in what would become Mountpleasant was John Grimes who arrived in 1832 from Kentucky. By 1840 he had acquired land around the current point ofpresent-day Mountpleasant which became known as "Grimes's Land." A post office called Grimes's Landing was established there on April 15th, 1840 by J W Grimes himself under the name of "Mount Pleasant". The first school in what would become Mountpleasant opened its doors on October 1st, 1841 when Elisha Dickinson taught two students to read and write using an old pump organ purchased for $5 from Ebenezer Drake. From this humble beginning Mt pleasant continued to grow until it reached its current size over fifty years later with 3 thousand residents including many married women who raised children without husbands or fathers nearby to provide them with education and support. In 1920 dynamite exploded at Oak Cliff Academy killing thirty five people while teaching math there; this event forever changed Mountpleasant as it served as a symbol of disaster that rocked America during those dark days following World War I providing much needed relief for families struggling through difficult times after the war ended . The explosion also destroyed many homes and businesses within minutes leaving little time or opportunity for anyone living in those areas to return home before classes started again on Monday morning.. For several decades afterwards governmental buildings were built just outside of town limits signifying how important education remained even during difficult times with only limited access to townspeople due to lack of resources However these days things are starting to change as more and more people are coming back into town looking for opportunities because they see new possibilities opening up here

Mount Pleasant is a ghost town located in Willacy County, Texas, on the banks of the Corpus Christi River. The townsite was founded in 1875 by German immigrants, and was abandoned in 1915. It was mentioned in one of Mark Twain's books, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), as a place where Huck Finn could buy goods from an old man named Mr. Fuzzybottom. The first documented visit to Mount Pleasant occurred on October 24, 1875, when Captain George Armstrong Custer and his party encountered Native Americans while traveling through Willacy County. After learning about the American Indian Wars occurring at that time, Custer ordered his men not to fire upon the Indians but instead make them drink whiskey before capturing them. Three days later, Captain Custer's force discovered Mount Pleasant and made camp there for the night. In 1915, Mount Pleasant was abandoned by its original inhabitants after land ownership passed from German to Anglo-American hands. A few weeks later, however, rumors began circulating around Willacy County that a vengeful spirit known as "The Widow" had recently visited the abandoned townsite and been tormenting its residents with bad luck since then. In response to this fearmongering hysteria, many people decided to abandon their homes for good in what would become known as "The Great Dereliction." Little did they know that only two years later another group of Germans would arrive in Mountpleasant and begin developing it into a sleepy community once again - this time for all purposes as an intentional ghost town. In 1984 local historian Don Ferguson set out to document all of Mountpleasant's past through research and interviews with key individuals involved with its development over the years - including those who had originally left the town during The Great Dereliction: Aunt Emmaline Schulz (the widow who tormented locals earlier in history), Harry Kappeler (a German immigrant who developed property adjacent to Mountpleasant), Alois Poff (an early settler who purchased some land near present day Mt Pleasant), John Schnitzer (a truck driver employed by Japanese investors who planned on building a reservoir nearby) - all of whom helped contribute toMountpleasant's return back into living memory after nearly 90 years off-limits due to safety concerns! Ferguson also interviewed several notable historical pieces associated with Mount pleasant such as photos taken inside The Widow's house during her final days; artifacts related to pioneer life such as saddles used by mountain men prior to arriving at Mount pleasant;and even some physical evidence found around town such as postcards from early settlers which show they were still living there during prohibition! In addition Ferguson compiled a documentary entitled "A Ghost Town Returns: History ofMountpleasant" which premiered at the West Side Cultural Centerplex last November and can be viewed online here .

They settled on what is now called Rancho Santa Fe, and started ranching operations in this area. In 1836, General Sam Houston was appointed Commander of Texas and his forces began conquering Mexican land. He made a route through Mount Pleasant which became known as the San Jacinto Trail. In 1846, Battle of Monterey took place here when American Commodore John C. Fremont attacked Mexico's warships off the coast of California. In 1865, General Order No. 2 was issued by President Andrew Johnson ordering all citizens of Texas to register with the military authorities within 72 hours or face penalties such as temporary imprisonment and/or fines up to $10,000. This order led to increased tensions between Texans and Mexicans because many people felt thatregistering would lead to greater compliance with government regulations. The Mount Pleasant Massacre occurred on January 6, 1865 when Confederate soldiers massacred six Mexican civilians who had tried to register with the military authorities
