Mount Pleasant was a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States located on the banks of the San Jacinto River. The community was founded in 1857 by Methodist missionaries as an agricultural station on the then-newcomers' only wagon road. In 1870, Mount Pleasant incorporated as a village and began to grow as a center for trade and transportation along the railroad. In 1880, Mount Pleasant became the base of operations for Major General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army during his attempt to retake Mexico from Victoriano Huerta. Santa Anna's forces were routed at Palo Alto Creek and much of their equipment was lost or destroyed. As a result of this defeat, many Texans decided that they would rather live in larger towns than return to rural life. The town slowly declined over the next few decades until it ceased to exist entirely by 1920. However, its legacy can still be seen in today's community; its well-preserved Victorian architecture and streetscape are testimony to its importance during some of Texas' most significant moments in history.
In 1836, Mount Pleasant was the location of a skirmish between Texans and Mexican forces. The battle resulted in a Texas victory and Mexico's withdrawal from Texas.
