Mount Pleasant is a town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,829 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area and was included in the Greater Houston metropolitan area until 2011. In 1881 Mount Pleasant had a population of 314. By 1890 it had increased to 524 with a school, post office and several stores. The first white settler in Mount Pleasant was James Pemberton who arrived on May 8, 1881 from his home near Fredericksburg, Virginia with his family. He and others built their homes around what is now corner of Main and Buchanan Streets. The town quickly became known for its fertile soil which made cotton possible in this region. This industry continued to grow until the early 1920s when World War I caused prices to rise so much that many farmers abandoned cotton production altogether and replaced it with other crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans and oil palm plantations. After the war ended most farmers returned to cotton but by 1930 only 10% of Mount Pleasant's residents still worked in agriculture while 90% were urban workers employed in manufacturing or service jobs such as retail sales or 9-to-5 workdays at factories like J C Penney or Sears Roebuck & Co.. In 1925 Mountpleasant voters passed an ordinance establishing education services including a high school which opened its doors on September 17th that year followed by a middle school (now known as John Marshall High School) on October 1st before opening its doors to all students forgrades K-12 on December 14th (the date Woodrow Wilson announced he would seek re-election). A number of churches also operated within the confines of town limits providing religious instruction to local children during those difficult years just prior to America's entry into World War II; however due largely demand from servicemen stationed throughout the country many schools closed their doors after 1945 save one which reopened under new leadership named Christendom College Preparatory School located adjacent to State Highway 183 east of downtown Mtpleasant; state troopers are currently assigned there during open enrollment periods according to recent student surveys After World War II economic growth resumed thanks largely to petroleum production brought about by federal energy subsidies resulting from newly developed methods such as hydraulic fracturing discovered along East Texas margins during this time period culminating in construction beginning in 1963 of Interstate 20 through Medina County linking Fort Worth with Dallas – making Mountpleasant one stoplight on what has become known nationwide as "The Wall".
