Mount Pleasant is a small town in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Mount Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department serves the community. The first fire department in Mount Pleasant was organized on November 26, 1881 by Capt. Prentice Hixon and 12 other volunteers from neighboring towns of Ector, Garza Heights and White Rock. In 1906, the US Post Office moved to Mount Pleasant from Brownwood and opened its doors on Main Street. In 1909, a small Methodist church was built in the town square and remained in use until it burned down in 1984. The current Mtpleasant Baptist Church (built in 1923) is also used for services today. The Mount Pleasant Cemetery opened its doors to residents of Mount Pleasant on July 5, 1922 as Lone Elm Cemetery[1]. A total of 301 graves were placed there that year[2]. On October 2, 1951,[3] an act was passed authorizing the construction of a new high school within the bounds of Lone Elm Cemetery[4]. Construction began on October 8th and completed on December 17th; named Highland High School after nearby Highland Park which had been annexed into Lone Elm during this time period[5]. Highland disbanded in 1966 when all schools within Arlington Heights consolidated into one larger district Twelfth Ward School District #27.[6] As early as 1915-16 local citizens formed a Ladies Auxiliary to help care for those with invalidities or widowhood(s). Mrs Johnnie Cooke started delivering food to benefit these families at her home until her death in 1932; thereafter Mrs Helen Iverson took over responsibility for helping out with meal distribution until 1938 when Mrs Alice Chamberlain became responsible[7]. On August 1st 1916 Lillie Anderson died suddenly leaving two children: Clyde (1915) & Ruth (1917). Clyde married Alma McKinney on December 4th 1918 & they have resided here since then! They are currently both deceased but their descendents still live hereabouts & maintain close ties with their childhood home!
