A Mr. Brown donated land for a Methodist church and when it was completed in 1879, he gave $2,000 to its construction fund In 1908-1909 there were two brush fires that burned over 100 acres each near Mount Pleasant. One destroyed several homes and killed one person; the other only caused extensive damage and some loss of life with no injuries reported In 1919 an individual named Harry Witherspoon erected a windmill on his property north of Mount Pleasant which became known as "Witherspoon's Mill". This windmill (now owned by Pembina National Forest) still operates today and produces power for local businesses A post office called Mount Pleasant was established in 1881 but discontinued operations in 1907

It is located on the eastern edge of the county and around mile marker 9 from Interstate 35W. The first European settlers in Cooke County were Frenchmen who arrived in 1795 and named their land "Pleasant." They founded a post office here in 1804, but it didn't take off until after the Mexican-American War when Captain James K. Polk established Mount Pleasant as an encampment for Confederate troops during their attempt to cross the Llano Estacado into Mexico. In 1865, General John C. Frémont's forces camped nearby while besieging Fort Worth; when they left to return home, most of them (but not Captain Polk) traveled by wagon overland to Niceville where they took passage on the Galveston Empress which got out before it was captured by Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. In 1871, Mount Pleasant became a city when its citizens voted to annex rural Cooke County and become part of Brownsville . When Brownsville merged with McAllen , Mount Pleasant remained an independent municipality until becoming annexed again by McAllen in 1987 after a long lawsuit fought by residents who argued that annexation would deprive them of their economic independence Mountpleasant is located on old Rice Road east of I-35W exit 9A (Upper Colorado Boulevard). The original settler name for this area may have been "Pleasant Hill" because there was no real hill here until later development occurred around mile marker 9 from I-35W - then known as Devil's Lane - leading up to what is now downtown Mount Pleasant It should be noted that Pleasure or any other spelling variations were all commonly used back then so even if someone knew the original settler name for this location they probably wouldn't know how to spell it today! mapquest has an interesting history page about early maps of this area
The first European to visit the area was Spanish explorer Antonio de la Garza in 1602. The area that is now Mount Pleasant was part of the Alamo National Monument until it was created in 1924.
