After three years of exploration, Powell returned with news that he had found more gold but no means of extracting it without ruining delicate surface mines nearby. This led to renewed interest in mount pleasant as an important transportation link between San Antonio and Austin during this time period – something that would be important during later gold rushes throughout central Texas. Mountpleasant experienced another boom period starting around 1865 when oil discoveries were made along Interstate 35 near Waco; this led to increased traffic through town as motorists sought out potentially lucrative leases onfelds located within easy reach of oil wells. Many small businesses were founded during these years thanks to opportunities created by this new industry – including a bakery which grew into one of the most successful local businesses today.
