Mount Pleasant, Texas is a small town in Vernon County, Texas. The population was 1,713 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Mount Pleasant is located on State Highway 36 and its ZIP code is 78735. The first white people to live in what is now Mount Pleasant were two families who came from Illinois in 1847. The first post office was established here in 1853. By 1870, Mount Pleasant had a school and three stores. A wagon road led to the settlement from Fort Worth via present day US Hwy 183 and FM 476 when that route was completed in 1872 as part of the Central Texas Trail system. In 1902, George Fenton built a natural gas well at what is now known as Fenton Hill which helped spur development around this corner of Vernon County. In 1908, Mount Pleasant had four businesses - one hotel, one grocery store, one seed company and one mill - along with two churches and a few homes. The population grew rapidly during World War I due to military supply shortages; however following World War II there was little growth until after the Korean War when new industry began to develop near by such as plastics manufacture and oil shale production From 1950-1975 Mtpleasant experienced rapid growth due to petroleum Refinery construction nearby; however by 2000 it had slowly begun to decline again due mainly to population loss associated with healthcare expansions within nearby Austin Today Mountpleasant has only 2 businesses left operating out of 9 total pre-2000 There are no schools or health clinics within walking distance so most citizens rely on government funding for basic needs including healthcare Some residents have started form other communities outside TX but many feel they will never be able to fully retire here

This group of business owners soon developed into what is now known as the "mountain gentleman" class of East Texans: men who owned large tracts of land but also enjoyed generous government support given to them by both state legislatures and President James K Polk himself. These so-called gentlemen landowners would often invites their friends and family members down to visit their holdings while they took care Of crops or hunted deer; at such events they would be joined by other high-ranking citizens including politicians and businessmen from surrounding counties - all eager to learn about frontier life and witness firsthand how this newly arrived American aristocracy managed one of America's most complex systems
The town of Mount Pleasant was founded in 1837 by James Gillespie and his wife, Martha. The town was named for the family's plantation on the east side of the Rio Grande. In 1841, Captain John L. Gillespie purchased land in what is now Mount Pleasant from the Spanish government. He began to build a cattle ranch there and named it after his father-in-law, General Sam Houston. The ranch became very successful and provided income for the Gillespie family until it was sold in 1853 to J. D. Perkins Sr., who moved it to Menard County.
