Missouri City is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 2,362 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County and is part of the Austin–Houston metropolitan area. The first people to live in Missouri City were Native Americans who arrived during Prehistoric times. There are several theories about where this town started, but one theory suggests that it may have originated from a hunting party led by Captain James Fannin in 1836 when he discovered oil wells near what is now Missouri City. Fannin named his new settlement after General Sam Houston’s hometown in Alabama, Huntsville (now Tarrant County), which he had recently visited on his exploratory trip through Texas. In 1837, Major John Sitton built Fort Bend County courthouse and court house in what is now downtown Missouri City after being appointed as its first justice of peace. This building still stands today and can be seen from Interstate 75 eastbound between exits 129 and 130A. In 1840, Drury bought 202 acres (8 ha) northeast of present-day downtown from owner James Murchison for $5 per acre ($100 per square mile). He began developing this land into what would become known as "The Bluff". Once completed, The Bluff became one of the most important commercial areas in town because it offered fresh water resources nearby and easy access to markets for goods imported from Europe or Canada. By 1851, however, a series of floods destroyed much of The Bluff and forced Drury to sell his land again for $10 per acre ($160 per square mile). However, this time he decided to move his operations inland to what would become known as "The Hill". By 1860, some 1,000 people lived in What Is Now Missouri City proper; by 1870 that number had grown to 3,000 due to various waves of immigration: Germans (1,500), Irish (2200), Englishmen (3000), Mexicans (4000), Poles (6000), Swedes (6100) – all seeking opportunities closer to newspapers and businesses than El Paso or San Antonio had been offering them back then! By 1880 there were 10 families living here with property valued at $8000 ().
