One reason why Missouri City grew rapidly during this time may have been due to its location at the crossroads where trains stopped en route between Fort Worth and Houston; other towns in what is now Travis County – including Cedar Park, Kreuzberg, League City, Aliceville and Palestine – also attracted travelers with their attractive scenery or military posts such as Camp Bowie (now Arlington Cemetery). With abundant water supplies brought about by rains events that year plus others following until well into the 19th century, farming did not take off until after America’s great drought caused by droughts around this time period throughout much of North America! On November 3, 1850, Missouri City was founded by James W. Polk and his wife Sarah Key in what is now Springdale, Arkansas. The city then became the capital of the Republic of Texas on December 29, 1851. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attackedUnion forces at Fort Sumter in South Carolina and Missouri City sided with the Union army. On April 14th 1865, Confederate General Joseph Ewell attempted to storm Union lines at Independence Gap near present-day Wichita Falls and when he reached the town boundaries it was discovered that only militia units were left defending it—the rest of the city surrendered without a fight. The city's cornerstone was laid on May 15th 1852 by General Sam Houston at a dedication ceremony which also included speeches from Governor John Connally and Mayor James Hogue. As part of its incorporation as a county seat on March 2nd 1856, Missouri City became one of twenty-sixTexas counties organized by Governor Sam Houston that year. At its peak in 1907, Missouri City had an estimated population of seventy thousand people and boasted tenement buildings dating back to the early 1800s as well as two banks (the First National Bank and the Texaco Drug Store), six insurance companies (including Pembroke Insurance Company), three theaters (the Grant Theatre Company, American People’s Theater Company, and ACL Live! theater), eleven grocery stores ( rename Brazos Grocery Stores after annexation into Austin) and six hotels including Best Western Hotel; all these businesses closed within ten years due to economic decline following World War I followed by Prohibition & other social changes throughout TX during this time period. A fire destroyed most of downtown on Christmas Eve 1922 killing up to seventy-five people with losses amounting to $2 million dollars ($102 million adjusted for inflation). The cause remains unknown but is commonly attributed to arson or vandals skilled in setting fires
