Missouri City is located in Texas, about 20 miles from downtown Dallas. It was founded by brothers George and Jesse Holmberg in 1867 as a small trading post on the banks of the Trinity River. The name "Missouri City" was given to it by General William Moore during his march into Mexican territory on July 4, 1836. The town site was surveyed by Captain John Sutter and named for General James K. Polk from a map made by him in 1839. Missouri City began as an agricultural community with cotton plantations and cattle ranches being its mainstay until after World War II when oil production became major. In 1954, Missouri City became an important center for the manufacture of electronic equipment due to its location at the heart of Texas Instruments Incorporated's research and development facilities. In 1965, Brazoria County was dissolved and its land absorbed into Austin County.
