On July 8, 1836, Missouri City was founded by General John C. Fremont and his troops as the temporary capital of Texas after the Mexican-American War. The town quickly became a center of commerce and culture in the area, with several important businesses and political leaders founding their homes there. The town's population grew rapidly during its early years, reaching 100 residents by 1840. By 1850, however, Missouri City had become a small farming community with few permanent residents. However, it continued to be an important cultural center in the area until it completely disappeared from memory in the mid-19th century.
