The first permanent settlers in Missouri City were John and Jane Cook who arrived in 1836. They had two children, Charles and Martha. The Cooks built a log cabin on the banks of the Brazos River. In 1840, they married Anna Woodruff, who also came to Missouri City from Texas. The couple raised six children: Anna (born 1841), John (1843-1912), Charles (1845-1927), Martha (1848-1921), James Loyd (1851-1937) and Mabel Elizabeth Sinkler (born 1865). In 1876, the city was named after General Sam Houston because he had donated land for it. In 1907, the Houston family donated another tract of land for the city limits. In 1936, Houston dedicated a new courthouse which is still in use today. During World War II, Missouri City was an important naval base because it housed several warships including USS "Texas" and USS "Oklahoma". The military used the courthouses for various purposes such as storage and transport. After the war ended, many of these ships were sold or scrapped and most of the infrastructure inside the Courthouse closed down. However, some parts of it are still in use today including its rotunda where court hearings take place today are held as well as its original courtroom walls which can be seen from outside the building when looking up at it from I-30/ interstate highway 10
