Missouri City, Texas is a city in the US state of Texas. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Hidalgo County. The town began as an agricultural community in 1881 near what is now I-10 and FM 1525. A post office called "Pecos" was established in 1884, and within two years had a population of twenty-five residents. In 1886, Pecos became the county seat after it was granted by the General Land Office to Vernon Caddis for his rancho de Pecos west of present day Missouri City. The first courthouse was built in 1889 on Main Street, just east of its current location on Wilson Boulevard. In 1907, Kansas Pacific Railway built a line through Missouri City connecting it with El Paso, TX and Mexico City, MX; this led to major development in downtown Missouri City including new hotels, restaurants and other commercial interests (though some longtime businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Company continued to operate until around 1970). The city's annexation into El Paso made it one of southernmost municipalities within El Paso County and also increased its economic importance since many people living outside the incorporated city were employed by nearby businesses or cities which relied on Kansas Pacific Railroad services for transportation. However during World War II most manufacturing took place outside of town due to scarce resources hereabouts; however some industries did exist such as munitions production at Fort Bliss Army Ammunition Plant south of town while others such as trucking service handled by Midwestern Truck Lines Incorporated remained operational until 1985 when they merged with United States Truck Lines Incorporated forming United States Truck Lines (USA) Incorporated headquartered in Missouri City proper from which all operations continued until 2002 when that company merged into FedEx Corporation parent company FedEx Ground Operations division headquartered in Memphis Tennessee.) A significant event occurred during 2006 when construction began on I-10/FM 1525 interchange project that would create much needed off-ramps for northbound traffic exiting I-10 eastbound onto FM 1525 concurrent with reopening of I-10 westbound from Loop 610 East; this project was completed successfully without incident just prior to Christmas Eve 2007 thanks largely to local Community Volunteers who worked tirelessly overnight shoveling snow out between lanes making travel difficult but ultimately successful! The first settlers in Missouri City were James Hennigan and his family. They started a small farm in 1838. The town was named after General James K. Polk, who had been president at the time. Missouri City was incorporated on May 10, 1847, and became a city of the United States on December 15, 1893.
