The first missionaries arrived at Santa Clara de Taos on December 21, 1836. They were Father José de Jesús María Valdez and Sister Bernadette of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The small community quickly grew with the arrival of additional missionary brothers and sisters over the next few years. A school was built soon after and began instruction in January 1840. In 1847, a mill was built to produce flour for local residents and goods exported to Mexico City. By 1850, there were also two churches, four schools, a jail, a post office, two stores and several homes in Mission. In 1862–1863 an important battle took place near Mission when three companies of Confederate troops unsuccessfully tried to cross the Rio Grande into Texas during their attempt to expand their slaveholding empire southward
