A cotton gin was added to the town limits in 1907. Growth continued until World War II when it declined due to agriculture industry decline and migration out of McLennan County. After 1945, there has been growth thanks to Hispanic settlement which has led to increased job opportunities for the community's residents

Mission, Texas is the most recent addition to the U.S. state of Texas and it was founded in 1836. The town that would be named Mission was founded by Gabriel García Márquez, who was on his way to becoming a general in Mexico City when he ran into difficulties near what is now San Antonio. He decided to establish a mission and reached Fort Concho on May 24, 1836, after traveling for four days through difficult terrain and encountering no living creatures other than an occasional deer or rabbit. Upon arrival at the fort, García Márquez met Congressman José Joaquín Alvarado and ordered them both to write back home recommending that Mexico annex Texas because its soil would be perfect for agriculture. It wasn’t until 1840 that Mexican troops arrived in order to expel American settlers from the area. A treaty between the United States and Mexico resulted in US citizens being expelled from TX within 10 years of its establishment; however, Mexican citizens were not allowed entry into or occupancy of TX without first receiving permission from their government counterparts. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Mission was burned down by Confederate forces while under occupation by Union forces before being rebuilt as an agricultural community with a focus on cattle raising and Missions became one of the leading livestock operations in TX. The last mission closed its doors in 1984 before reopening as an educational facility called “Mision Zaragoza” which offers classes such as Spanish language immersion for pregnant women and young children as well as environmental science classes taught abouttxs environment during drought periods
Mission San Antonio de Padua was founded in 1723 by Franciscan friars. The mission was the largest of the Presbíterian missions and is still in operation. It served as a center for missionary work in Texas, California, and New Mexico.
