Mission is a small town in Jefferson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town of Mission was founded by Mexican Americans in 1836 as a mission station on what is today's Army Boulevard. In 1846, following the Mexican–American War, it became part of the newly formed Republic of Texas and thence into U.S. history as an American community located in present day Dallas County and Collin County. In 1906, most of Mission (and all of Collin County) were annexed by Dallas as part of its annexation into the city limits; however, portions still remain within Mission Township and are now considered to be within the jurisdiction of Dallas proper. The name "Mission" has been applied to both parts since then because they share one common ZIP code: 75205 (the original mission site). The town’s founder Michael Quinn (1819-1897) had come from Great Britain with his families in 1836 when large numbers of Anglo-Mexican immigrants had streamed into Texas after Santa Anna’s victory over Mexico at Polanco de Tejas on October 20 that year. Many Mexicans also came overland through crossing points eastward along the Rio Grande River and becoming residents not only in San Antonio but also around New Braunfels and later missions such as Presidio (see below).qv Quinn organized a transportation system for these new arrivals – wagons pushed offriver onto makeshift bridges across Red River until they reached Austin where wagon trains could be unloaded before continuing their journey to various destinations such as Fort Sam Houston or San Antonio where they might find work or housing before finally reaching Goal Station onArmy Boulevard nearpresent day downtownDallas. Mission, Texas was founded in 1836 by Antonio L. Armijo and his brother José. The town was named for the Spanish Mission Santa Clara de Asís located nearby on an old Indian farmstead. In 1850, the San Isidro mission was founded just east of Mission and became a center of learning for Latinos in southern Texas. In 1872, the Mexican government granted Rancho Encinal to Antonio L. Armijo’s son-in-law Manuel García Garza. This ranch provided much needed grazing land for cattle and Supported missions near Mission including San Francisco de Asís (1875),San José (1889), and Nuestra Señora del Rosario (1910). The area around Mission also served as a shipping point for goods destined for Mexico City from the Railroadtown area north of town. In 1916, Antonio LArmijo sold his interest in Rancho Encinal to George Waggoner & Sons who renamed it Rancho Aguascalientes y Las Flores because they were increasing their holdings in this region of southern California and wanted to promote Mexican culture there as well. The ranch continued to be run by Waggoner brothers until 1939 when it reverted back to Manuel García Garza’s ownership
Mission, Texas history began in the 1830s when Englishman John C. Frémont and his band of soldiers, who were called the "Mountain Men," came to present-day Texas to find new land for the United States. In 1836, President James K. Polk approved a US$2 million purchase from Mexican president Manuel Diaz de Santa Anna for 1/3 of what would become Mission County. The land was purchased on behalf of the Mexican government by American businessman James Fenton and Development Company, which had been founded by Midland founder J.P. Morgan in 1873 as a venture to build railroads through Mexico. The first mission built in San Antonio was on Monterey Road near present-daydosey Park and it served as a base of operations for missions throughout much of central Texas until 1796 when Father José de Zumalacámara organized the Tejanos (Juan Diego's people) into an autonomous military battalion under his command known as La Corona del Norte (the North Star). A second mission was established at Missions Blanco (Blanco Hill) in 1836 and functioned until 1791; its land became part of Presidio County after that date. In 1847, Mexico ceded Alamo Heights to the US for $5 million following its victory over Mexico at Palo Alto against Spanish forces during the Alamo Rebellion; however, no church or school could be built on site because it lacked title or ownership rights from Spain. In 1850–51, Father José Porras led a group of missionaries from east Texas along with six Indian guides westward across New Mexico Territory into California where they constructed what is now known as Rancho San Fernando del NorTE (Rancho Santa Fe), complete with adobe buildings and cattle stalls overlooking today's downtown Los Angeles Freeway Spur north of Interstate 210 in Covina Unified School District #81227A
