In recent years, however, Mission has struggled to keep up with changing trends in its community and surrounding areas. Unemployment rates have climbed over 30%, while crime rates have increased significantly due to drug trafficking and illegal immigration. Despite these challenges, Mission residents remain committed to their community and hope for future change. They are proud of their history and culture which they believe has contributed much to their local economy and quality of life.

Mission, Texas is a small town in Lubbock County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1836 by Mormon missionaries as the first American settlement on the Rio Grande. The mission is located near what is now Midland and Odessa. In 1848 it became part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas and then into United States territory under occupation by Mexico during the Mexican–American War. When California gained independence from Mexico in 1848, Mission Santa Fé de las Americas became part of that state and Mission San José de la Luz fell within California's newly organized Alta California province. In 1861, due to increasing tensions between Texas and New Mexico over claims to Rancho El Paso east of the Rio Grande, President Abraham Lincoln ordered General James Kenedy to take possession of Mission San José de La Luz from its Mexican owners so that it could be used for military purposes. The order resulted in a protracted legal battle that ended with an arbitrator awarding Rancho El Paso to New Mexico; however, Kenedy never took possession of it because he had no authority to do so under US law. In 1865-1866, Union forces burned down some buildings in El Paso at the request of local ranchers who claimed they were being used as army barracks; this event helped spur development around the mission area which began shortly thereafter. In 1870s missionary activity decreased due to competition from other missions up north but resumed after a lull caused by wars with Apache Indians in Arizona and Sinaloa during that decade. In 1889-90 president Benjamin Harrison authorized construction of a new church building on old land outside Oficina del Pueblo (missions headquarters). The new church replaced an older one destroyed by fire in 1886 while still serving as mission headquarters; both structures were completed in 1893-94 at a cost of $1 million dollars ($ when measured against present values). The original walls around Mission San José remain standing today: they are about high and nearly three feet thick (the equivalent height today). A plaque inside reads "Blessed are those who live upon this land whose hearts are openhearted towards our Savior Jesus Christ." Today Mission has more than 2,000 residents including many descendants of early missionaries

By 1870, Mission had become one of the largest American towns in terms of population size. In 1881, it was renamed Dallas after President James K. Polk's brother-in-law William T.Dallas.
