The town was named after the LDS prophet Brigham Young’s hometown in Illinois. A few years later, on December 2nd, 1878, Texans ratified an amendment to their state Constitution that legalized slavery in Texas. This amendment set off a heated debate about whether or not Texans should own firearms for protection against slaveholders. Despite this controversy, gun business continued to grow rapidly in Mission during the late 1800s and into the early 1900s. Gunsmiths and rifle dealers quickly became known as "the best in the world." In 1907, Mexican-American rancher Vicente Guerrero decided to establish himself as a political power player in southeastern Texas by buying land nearMission from Anglo settlers. As Mexican nationals began arriving in large numbers throughout southern Texas during this time period (especially following World War I), guns became an important part of ranching and violence increased within certain areas of Mission due to turf wars over control of firearms. In 1916 Govan Bowers replaced incumbent Mayor Wm Hennessey with John Ladd as mayoralty’s first African American leader After serving one year under Bowers new administration some tension developed between Hispanics and African Americans over education opportunities within missions schools which were funded partially through federal funds then municipally run . With increasing tensions came more shootings across different parts of Mission including homicides up 50% from 1915-1916

The Mission Creek Baptist Church (founded in 1836) is one of the oldest churches in Austin and one of its most iconic structures. The current building was completed in 1907 and seats 350 people. Mission's history goes back to 1836 when two friars from France founded a mission here for Spanish Catholics under the leadership of Father José de la Vega y Urdaneta. In 1838, Mexican forces destroyed the mission complex and all its equipment, but they later rebuilt it with French help as La Missions Françaises d'Austin (French Missions of Austin). In 1840, another group of missionaries arrived from Louisiana and began preaching here; these were Father Miguel Asistencia y Noriega (Miguel Asistencia). By 1850, there were over 100 priests living in or visiting Mission Creek; many served simultaneously multiple parishes throughout central Texas. In 1853, President American Manuel Antonio Lopez y Gómez granted land to John Connally for a cattle ranch that would become known as Rancho del Espejo (Rancho de Espinosa). Some prominent Texans who developed businesses near Rancho del Espejo include ranchers William Hogg and J P Morgan. A mill built on Mission Creek by James Denton also became important early on; it still stands today and produces flour for local restaurants. In 1886, an act went into effect legalizing polygamy which caused some tension between native Alamo women and Anglo men within Mission Creek; this conflict led to several armed confrontations between settlers and Mexican troops over control of the creek corridor south of San Marcos Boulevard during Governor Manuel Gonzales' term as governor from 1889-1893. A new school was built on Main Street in 1870 by S W Webb Pope while his father operated an agricultural estate called "Eagle Crest". It soon proved inadequate for students growing up around such a large community soPope decided to build what is now Maureen Hood Elementary School on Neches Road adjacent to Eagle Nest Golf Course instead. Construction started on October 25th, 1870 and ended December 3rd because Webb Pope died before completion! Many residents donated materials including lumber, stone walls etc., which are still seen inside the school today including an old bell tower that serves as a visitor center/library annexe! A fire destroyed most facilities February 23rd 1900 but few buildings survived - only four schools remained standing by 1910 thanks to federal funding programs meant to rebuild missions after earthquakes had killed dozens earlier that year across Texas! Mission's economy depends heavily upon agriculture products such as cotton, cornmeal futures contractsugar beets etc.; numerous wholesale clubs occupy strategic locations near major thoroughfares throughout the community giving shoppers access to items secondhand without having them delivered or picked up at their place of business
