Mission is a city in San Antonio, Texas, United States. The population was 781 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Bexar County and was founded on November 3, 1836 by Franciscan missionaries as a mission to convert the indigenous people of Mexico into Christianity. The name "Mission" comes from Spanish Missionero (missioner). In 1847, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all American soldiers and civilians loyal to him murdered as part of his effort to quash an uprising against his rule. As a result, most of the missions in Texas were abandoned after their occupants were either killed or driven out by Mexican forces. A few remain standing today including Mission San José de las Flores in Austin and Mission Concepción de Zaragoza in Galveston. The Presidio of Bexar was established on November 3, 1836 by Father José Gomez y Valdez as an interim structure until Mexico's new government could be put into place. The first mission built there was Islas Madres on what is now Uptown San Antonio - named for nearby Mariaposa Parish which had been founded earlier that year as one of many Catholic villages located near Fort Sam Houston. In 1840 the friars began constructing the present-day Presidio which still stands today; it served as both a military outpost and parish center before becoming a municipalidad (municipality) within Bexar County on October 1, 1850. As more settlers arrived in Bexar County during the late 1800s and early 1900s, various religious orders offered their services to them at various sites across the county seat; these included Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at Alamo Square (founded in 1848), Our Lady of Loreto Church at Elmendorf Road (1864), Corpus Christi Catholic Cathedral at West Side Highway (1887), Notre Dame de la Salute Church at East Side Highway/Lakewood Boulevard (1911) and numerous others until 1934 when all but two were closed due to budgetary constraints resulting from World War I; Stations Of The Cross Jesuit Order's Rancho Encalzado location remaining operational until its closure four years later while Holy Trinity Anglican School continued operations until 1966 when it also became co-ed with other schools within newly formed Bexar County Government Services District #2 based out of downtown San Antonio Despite this history however several structures including Alamo Square remain prominently visible throughout much of unincorporated portions of neighboring Travis County through hosted events/parks operated by respective religious orders BBQindaloo?

In 1851, Mission began to receive converts from all over Texas including Mexican immigrants working in the Presidio of San Antonio. In 1863, Mexican-American War ended with Mexico's surrender and Ulysses S Grant became president of United States. As a result of this event Mission lost its status as an official missions district and its privileges as a religious center were rescinded by federal law. However, it continued to serve as an agricultural center with cattle ranching being its primary activity until after World War II when it reverted back to its traditional commercial role as a religious community

After Mexico's Independence from Spain in 1821, San Antonio began to grow as a city and Mission slowly lost population. By 1875, only 4 residents lived there; most of the town had been burned down in an unsuccessful attempt by Mexican soldiers to capture Santa Anna. Today, Mission is a small community located about 25 miles southeast of San Antonio on FM 2792.
