The first post office in Mission opened in 1839. In 1870, two brothers founded the First Baptist Church which remains a major religious force today. In 1907, Mission became county seat of Schleicher County when that county was created from parts of Hudspeth and Maverick counties. The new courthouse was built on what are now Fourth Street and Clay Streets within the limits of present-day Mission. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed much of downtown San Antonio and many businesses closed their doors throughout the city including those owned by members of the Pueblo Revolt leadership such as Juan Ortiz and Fernando Rivera who had invested money in real estate there before the quake. Many people living nearmissions were killed or injured when buildings collapsed after being weakened by the quake's shaking but most residents managed to get back into their homes relatively unscathed. In 1996, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park opened its gates to the public for tours of Mission Chapel, General Store (now Museum), and other historic buildings within its boundaries. As part of this expansion, a visitor center opened adjacent to the museum that includes exhibits about Texas history and culture since 1840 through 2000; general information about missions; education programs for local children; audio/visual presentations about missions history; access to research materials such as photographs, maps, prints, documents, etc.; and climate data from weather stations throughout Bastrop County
Mission, Texas was founded on October 29, 1836 by General James Bullock and his brother-in-law Manuel Alvarez. The town was named for the Mexican mission of San Fernando which had been established in 1824. The first post office was established in the town on November 1, 1836. By 1861, Mission had a population of 2,500 people and it became an integrated part of the United States after the American Civil War.
