In 1848 an increase in missionary activity led to the erection of two more missions—San Antonio Missions and Townsite (now part of downtown Austin). The Mexican–American War brought increased military presence to Hudspeth County and obligedmissionaries to leave their homes; however, they continued missionary work in their new locations until about 1860. In 1892 Fort Sam Houston opened up within the limits of present-day Mission; it became one of Texas' original 24 state capitols. After years of growth and development associated with World War II (1939-1945), Mission lost its status as a rural community when Interstate 35E was completed through Hudspeth County in 1966. However, growth resumed after Interstate 35E's construction because much of Hudspeth County remains rural land which can be easily developed for housing or commercial uses such as shopping malls or cotton plantations. Although there are still some isolated farms remaining within the city limits, most residents now commute into Austin or other urban areas for employment opportunities throughout most parts of Texas including Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan areas adjacent to Mission Valley Regional Park located within its boundaries
