In the early 1800s, there were many people in Mineral Wells who were interested in shooting targets. One of the earliest and most popular target shooters was Major John A. Armstrong, who operated a successful business at 3010 Neches Street. He would often shoot his target holders at local fairs and parks. One of the best-known manufacturers of target holders was C. H. Herrington & Son, which became well known for their colorful Target Master models. They produced these products from 1879 to 1911. Many people in Mineral Wells started using Target Masters as their primary source for target Shooting equipment because they were durable and easy to use. The popularity of target holders continued into the 1920s when Boyd Arms Corporation began making them again out of hardwood stock with interchangeable tips (later replaced by metal tips). These days, Targetmasters are still very popular as classic hunting rifles or shotguns accessories!

Mineral Wells is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Mineral Wells" comes from the various minerals found here such as lead and silver. The first post office in Mineral Wells was established on March 12, 1881.
The history of shooting target holders dates back to before the development of firearms. Some early targets were made from game meat, such as rabbits, squirrels, and other small animals. Hunters would place these pieces of meat in a dry location and wait for their prey to come close. Once the animal was within striking distance, they would shoot at it with a bow or arrow. The hunter would then grab the animal by its fur or skin and pull it towards them so that they could take aim at the animal's heart or head. These early target holders were used for practice and not as actual weapons. However, over time different methods of using targets began to be developed. One method involved using stakes to hold up a target in an area where someone could shoot at it from various distances without having to stand close to the target. This method became known as “sideways firing” because you fired your arrows perpendicularly upwards into the air instead of towards the ground like with traditional bows and arrows which requires somebody to actually be on hand next to the target in order to hit it
The first target holders were made in 1892 by the Dreyer Manufacturing Company. The company made a number of different types of target holders, including those for handguns and shotguns.
In 1867, Mineral Wells was the first town in Texas to be chartered. The town was named after a well that had been discovered in the area. By 1870, Mineral Wells had a population of 150 people. In 1872, Mineral Wells became the county seat of Hudspeth County. By 1904, Mineral Wells had a population of 3,000 people and it became an agricultural center. In 1916, Mineral Wells was renamed as Dallas after World War I veteran James Bontrager Dallas. The city of Dallas annexed mineral wells from Hudspeth County in 1951 and from Travis County in 1957. Today, Mineral Wells is an incorporated city with a population of over 5500 residents. The history of this small community dates back to its incorporation into Texas in 1867 and its growth during the early years of the Lone Star State.
In 1881, the first store in Mineral Wells opened. That store was operated by John L. Nichols and his wife, Amelia Nichols. The first post office was established in Mineral Wells on October 26, 1881. The town of Mineral Wells was platted on February 17, 1882. The first school in Mineral Wells was built in 1882 and is still used today. In 1886, a sawmill and gristmill were erected in the town by J.W. Hulls and Son. The first railroad to reach Mineral Wells was the Houston & Dallas Railroad which arrived in 1888.
