The first white person to live in Mineral Wells was George R. Robertson in 1853. The town was founded by his father, James Robertson, when he land grant was awarded to him and his brother John in 1849. The town began as a small rural community with only a few homes and businesses. early settlers were farmers and their families who raised livestock, mined coal, and dug wells for water. In the 1870s, the population of Mineral Wells grew as people came to find new horizons in an area that had been undiscovered until then. By 1880, the town had increased to over 100 inhabitants with businesses such as grocery stores, hotels, and banks dotting the town center. By 1910 Mineral Wells had reached its peak with over 1,000 residents living within easy reach of each other on main streets and along railroad tracks. However, during World War I (1914-1918), Mineral Wells experienced some of its most difficult times due to the high demand for munitions made during WWI. This led to a decline in population throughout the 1920s until it stabilized around 1930 before experiencing another growth spurt in the 1940s which continues into this day
