Rifle stocks in Mineral Wells, Texas date back to the early 1800s. One of the earliest rifle stocks in this area was built by John Cramer at his farm on Folsom Street. This stock was used to shoot hogs and other game. The original rifle stock is still in use today, and can be found at the old Wilson gunsmith shop on Hwy 287 just outside of Mineral Wells. A second early Rifle Stock in Mineral Wells was built by George Sipple. This stock was used for shooting deer, bear, and other game out near town. The Mineral Wells community is located in the eastern part of Tom Davis County, Texas. The town was founded in 1849 by settlers from Colorado. In 1901, Mineral Wells became the capital of Tom Davis County. The population of Mineral Wells peaked at 25,000 in 1930 and has since declined to around 10,000 today. The town was named for a miningclaim that was located near present-day Mineral Wells. The claim was first surveyed by John Denton in 1847 and it is said that he named the property after mineral water he had discovered there. Today’s Geological Survey Museum features a reproduction of the original surveyor’s map of the area which shows where the claim sat and its surroundings at the time of its discovery. In 1849, Minerals Well Mining Company opened up shop in what is now Mineral Wells. They were one of the earliest companies to mine lead ore in Tom Davis County and they still operate today as Lead Mines & Smelters Incorporated (LMM&S). Over their years, LMM&S contributed over $1 million to local coffers through royalty payments on lead ore sales. Local businesses also benefited from increased trade as a result of their work with LMM&S: shops such as Smith Barney & Co., Humble Furniture Store and Masonic Supply Shop all grew rich off their dealings with Minerals Well Mine owners! In 1901, when Capital City developed around it, Mineral Wells became Capital City’s official government center – served by a post office (opened 1865), jail (opened 1861), library (opened 1898), court house (opened 1902) and numerous other municipal services. After World War II ended, many people left Capital City for better opportunities elsewhere in Texas but some remained until its closure in 1957 due to budget cuts within Travis County government…..Today less than 5% of Capital City residents remain connected to it through oral history or documentary evidence……… Mining activities ceased operations at Minerals Well Mine about 1911 due to technological advances however tailings continued being removed until 1959 when new technology caused an end to those operations too……….Today much of what used to be minerials well sits atop city limits abandoned long ago………

In 1876, the city of Mineral Wells became a county seat with voting rights for citizens over 21 years old. On November 3, 1907, Mineral Wells was merged into the new Baylor University town of Waco.
In 1881, Mineral Wells was founded by the United States government as a trading post on the Red River. The town quickly grew to become a popular stopping point for travelers on their way to the nearby oil fields. By 1903, Mineral Wells had a population of 4,000 people and was one of the most important commercial centers in Texas. In 1916, Mineral Wells became the capital of East Texas and it remained so until its annexation by Houston in 1954.
