Grimes and his wife, Fannie Bemis Grimes, who together founded the City Company which provided feed for 4500 head of cattle per day from their ranch at Pecos Pete Creek (now part of Midland). The early days were challenging, but also rewarding as mineral discoveries led to new businesses such as lumberyards and hotels being established downtown. By 1907, when Mineral Wells incorporated as a city, it had become one of the largest centers for oil production in Texas with over 10 oil rigs working at various sites along Red River Valley (today’s Midland). The growth and success of Oilfield Development Corporation (ODC) led to increased competition for land and jobs within town limits while also creating some much-needed economic stability during difficult times. In 1978 ODC merged with other geological exploration companies called The Perry Group which led to new opportunities for Mineral Wells residents including job training post-secondary institutions as well as private industry expansions such as chemical plants and meatpacking facilities; these advances continue today through specialties like plastics manufacturing and medical equipment sales. The town began to grow when it became home to Rice University in 1881 and Waco Oilwells Refining Company in 1903. In 1910, Mineral Wells was named for its location on an oil well near what is now Midtown Dallas. The city's rapid growth during World War II led to increased development around Interstate 30 and Main Street; today much of downtown Mineral Wells remains unchanged from its early days as a small agricultural town with many businesses serving local residents and tourists alike. The history of Mineral Wells goes back more than two centuries; prior to that it was known as "Fayetteville" after James A. Fayette, one of the first men to settle thereabouts in 1867. When first established, this place consisted but a single cabin - thatched and built by Mr. Fayette himself - within range of present day Midtown Dallas! This rural outpost soon grew into one of Southern Texas' most thriving towns due largely to its location at the crossroads where three major routes converged: Santa Fe Trail (south), Houston Road (west), and Trinity River (north). Today's stone-and- mortar buildings date back to before Lone Star College even existed - indeed some were once relics from old Rice University campus whichlay vacant for many years until finally being razed thanks in part To Mrs Betty Hargrave who spearheaded preservation efforts program back then & still does so albeit via professional restoration services! As oil fields started appearing all over Eastern Texas following discoveries made during the Klondike Gold Rush era (1859-1870), so too did new industries such as mineral processing plants – both large and small – dotting TX countryside like locusts upon a Placer gold field! By 1907 Coal Mines had opened up right next door & production quickly escalated; by 1920 there were over sixty mines open here including several big ones like Kerr Mining Company’s massive Cushing Mine which employed some 2500 men daily when it began operations! It wasn't until 1947 that Mineral Wells reached truly national attention when construction began on Interstate 30 across from town – just weeks ahead of President Harry S Truman’s historic visit!!! At long last our FastWest freeway had arrived!! And Minerals would never be the same again!!!! !!
The first permanent settlement in Mineral Wells was made by John A. Henderson on November 3, 1872. The town was named after the mineral well known as Mineral Wells Springs. Henderson operated a post office and store in the town from 1872 to 1875. The first school was built in 1875 and it served both the town and neighboring Phillips County. In 1886, Mineral Wells became an independent township with its own government. The first white settler to die in Mineral Wells was James Hinton on December 12, 1886.
