In 1871, Mineral Wells was founded by Colonel James H. White and his brother-in-law, George Fenton. In 1902, when oil was first discovered in neighboring Philander Field, Mineral Wells became one of the first towns to benefit from this new industry. With increased production came increased taxes and more traffic on Main Street. The influx of people also led to an increase in crime rates; however, Mayor John Denny worked tirelessly to keep Mineral Wells safe for residents and businesses alike. By 1920, there were over 100 businesses in Miner Welles (and more than 300 citizens) employing over 1,000 people who produced goods and services that contributed significantly to the local economy. The population peaked at around 2,500 during World War II but declined sharply following the war as many men left for military service or other opportunities overseas. However, during the postwar years Miner wells experienced some resurgence as entrepreneurs reopened some of their former businesses while also attracting new residents who desired an environment supportive of economic development according to Planner Gentry Land Company president Harry Ladd: “Miner Welles has always been a growing place because it is constantly being changed by newcomers; they want something new here so they come out [to] see what is going on” (Crocker). This lure has helped continue to support both business activity throughout our history as well as ensure that our downtown core remains vibrant today despite facing occasional challenges such as fire damage (eFigures 5 & 6).
The Mineral Wells oilfield was located in the present day town of Mineral Wells, Texas. The well was drilled by Texaco in 1958 and production began in 1959. The field was developed by Texaco until its acquisition by Royal Dutch Shell in 1987.
