The first guns were brought to Mineral Wells by settlers in the 1800s. The town was founded in 1887, and at that time there were only a few shotguns and handguns for people to shoot at targets. Some of the earliest pistols used for target shooting were made by blacksmiths in Mineral Wells. In 1892, a gentleman named Wm. Hurlbut donated four pistols to the town from his estate.
