Uranium production began at both mines in 1951 and continued until 1978 when they were closed due to environmental problems caused by radioactive emissions from the mines. As a result of these accidents, many families lost their jobs in Mineral Wells but have since regained some stability thanks to local job training programs and other community initiatives

Today Mineral Wells is home to over 1,000 residents and has become one of the largest cities in southern Texas. The city's rich history includes important milestones such as beingthe birthplace of singer Patsy Cline and musician Joe Bonamassa; hosting major annual events like the rodeo season; being named one of "The Top 10 Historic Places" by AAA in 2006; being featured on "Texas Monthly"'s list of "100 Best Places To Live"; and being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
