One of the most memorable moments from Mineral Wells’ history was when President George H.W Bush visited the town on July 4th, 1991 during his visit to Big Bend County. The president made a speech at Riverview Middle School which was recorded and later aired on television news programs around the country. This event helped solidify Miner Well’s reputation as a major tourist destination throughout Central America due to its proximity to some Of Mexico’s most famous attractions such as Chichen Itza National Park and Machu Picchu National Monument! Today mineral wells continue to be an important part of Big Bend County’s economy with their significant contributions to culture, education and employment opportunities for locals both blue collar workers (ranches)and white collar professionals (the City).

Because they had no other options, these men began to explore for new land and found prospecting opportunities in what is now southwest Texas. It wasn’t until 1836 that John Wells purchased 2,500 acres (1 km2) of land east of present day Mineral Wells from David Hockaday. This property would become known as Welles Rancho de la Bahia de los Espejos (Wells Ranch). In 1837, George wells organized a group of men called the “Oil Shippers” to search for new sources of oil inside and outside Mexico City. These men were able to find some good ground around Mesquite and its associated outposts along Interstate 10 near Deming Heights and San Angelo Creek. The first well drilled at Welles Rancho de la Bahia de los Espejos yielded 19 barrels (7 liters) of oil with an API gravity value of 36%. By 1840, there were more than 100 wells operating at Welles Rancho de la Bahia de los Espejos producing an average yield per well of 7 barrels (2 liters) with an API gravity value above 36%. As Production grew even faster at Welles Rancho de la Bahia de los Espejos, John Higgins decided to move his family from Missouri into this growing town in southeast Texas in 1843. Higgins renamed his town after himself – Mineral Wells – which he believed would help attract others to his fledgling business venture . The town of Mineral Wells was founded in 1871 by John Q. Mason and J.C. Goodspeed as a small cattle station on the Clear Fork of the Trinity River. The town quickly developed into a center for agricultural production, with a cotton gin, granary, and stockyards building up around the original village site. In 1886, Mineral Wells became the capital of Texas after it was selected as the new state capital by President George Washington Houston. The population of Mineral Wells grew to over 10,000 by 1900, and it continued to grow until World War II when it shrunk to its current size due to increased farming activity and other industrial growth in nearbyHouston.
