A school was built in 1870 and by 1880, there were several businesses in Mineral Wells including a hotel and a bank. The population of Mineral Wells increased rapidly during the 19th century and between 1881 and 1890 it reached 1,500 people. The town became an important transportation hub because of its location on the Texan Railroad and its access to water resources. In 1902, Mineral Wells was renamed after General John Mescue Johnston (1825-1896), commanding general at Fort Bend County during the Mexican War (1846-48).
