Mineral Wells is a city in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1876 by the merger of two settlements, Mineral and Wellington. The post office at Mineral Wells was established in 1877. The population of Mineral Wells was 5,811 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Mineral Wells was James Fenton who arrived from Kentucky on October 27, 1876. He named his new town after noted mineralogist William Hutton Welles who had visited the area earlier that year. Fenton also donated land to form the town site and built a small sod schoolhouse on it. In early 1877, Wm Espey opened a store at Wellesley and sold goods to traders and farmers living in nearby Center Hills, Georgetown Hills, Round Rock and San Marcos counties. By 1880-81 there were six stores in the community with an average weekly sales volume of $60; three millers operated one or more grist mills; five men were employed full time at local farms; six churches served the community with membership totaling 1,500; ten schools were organized within five years; four cotton ginners churned out white cottonseed flour for local markets; four blacksmiths repaired tools and horseshoes for settlers livin' off subsistence wages (one man earned $4 per week). In 1886-87 John Ladd acquired 2 acres (1 km2) east of town from heirs to cattleman David Garland McLane for $30 cash plus thirty acres (12 m2) worth of common land around town purchased from Colburn & Company furriers for $5 per acre ($320 total). In addition to raising livestock on this land which he fenced off into twenty-acre parcels Angie Ahern settled three hundred head of cows on Huffield Creek west of town between 1889 and 1893 resulting in a permanent population increase from 7 residents to 30 by 1897 when trails connected Mineral Wells with Round Rock through Springdale woodlands providing easy access both ways for travelers selling goods they produced near their homes as well as hunters/gatherings used by early Territorial inhabitants trying to catch game available close at hand while still within Mexican Indian territory
