That year, the first electric streetlights were installed in Mineral Wells. The town experienced a period of growth during World War I and postwar years; however, it declined after the war ended. Minerals were discovered in the area and production increased again during the 1970s through the 1980s; however, this period of growth ended too abruptly. During most of its history as a small community near Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, Mineral Wells had no more than 100 residents; however, over time its population grew to approximately 200 people due to new development within walking distance of its downtown core. Today there are around 400 residents living within easy reach of Mineral Wells' central business district (CBD) on State Highway 290/ Route 66/ State Highway 377 (which runs along Business Loop 410). Located just east of Interstate 10 on Uptown Boulevard between Main Street and US-290 cutoff Road is what was once known as "The Blacksmith Shop" - which is now home to several businesses including an antique store and restaurant called "The Gilded Cage." Hogg as an agricultural community named for mineral wells that had been found near the town site. The name "mineral Wells" came from early efforts to find oil and gas reserves in the area and because of this, the town became known for its production of these minerals. In 1939, Mineral Wells was renamed after General George Custer during World War II as part of General Custer's Reunion celebration at Fort Worth Army Base Incorporation (FAB).
